Vinyl and fiberglass frames handle moisture and last two to three decades. Vinyl doesn’t soak up water, so frames stay straight when we get hammered with rain in May. Fiberglass bends a hair when it’s 95 in July and 40 in January, but not enough to jam the door.

Houses near Spring Creek and Cypresswood watch wood frames rot because the air stays wet year-round. Wood doors need painting or staining every three to five years. The sills go soft after 15 or 20. In contrast, vinyl and fiberglass skip the maintenance and still keep water out.

Spray them with a hose or wipe them down with soapy water when they get grimy. No sanding, no paint cans. In our climate, these materials outlast wood by 10-plus years with half the work.

French doors, however, pay off when you’re moving furniture, running a buffet from kitchen to patio, or opening everything up during a cookout. Pick based on what you actually do.

Replacing a door with the same size unit takes four to eight hours. We pull the old one, check that the opening is square, drop in the new door, foam the gaps, nail trim, done. You’re not covering a hole with plastic overnight.

Spring storms blow in fast from May through September, so morning starts get the door sealed before the rain hits. Therefore, you’re not watching clouds roll in while your back wall is wide open.

Cutting a bigger opening or adding structural support stretches to one or two days. Custom bifolds take longer whereas straight swaps finish the same day.

Bifolds fold like an accordion and stack to one side or split both ways. Likewise, multi-slides push panels along tracks and stack them up, opening 20 feet of wall. Both erase the barrier between inside and outside.

Bifolds and multi-slides cost two to three times what sliders do because of heavier hardware, tighter tolerances, and a longer installation. You pay for the disappearing wall and the flexibility to open any section, but it’s a big price jump.
